The Tao of Metaphysics

Don't call me religious, call me a metaphysicist. For all of us who care about truth, metaphysics and physics top the list of self defined intrigues. What is physics and what is metaphysics? Physics is the study of matter and the material world. Metaphysics is the study of why the physical world acts the way it does. Physics can answer the question how, but not why. Theology asks who and why. I can't think of any other more important questions to ponder in life.

When Jacob asks the Biblical God " what is your name?" God answers to him "leolam" ( Exodus 3:13-15) In Hebrew "leolam" means forever, hidden, and also in the world. In other words then,

God is that which is forever hidden in the world. That, is metaphysics.

I was recently in a conversation with a man who told me that God being the omnipotent entity that he is, would not have taken millions of years to create mankind. And that he would have created mankind fully formed and operational, as an all powerful being. This was his argument against evolution. My answer was that but God didn't. God is forever hidden in the world. Leolam.

Upon thinking more deeply about this, I realized that if God had created mankind fully formed and operational, that he would no longer be hidden in the world. A creator would be obvious. If a creator was obvious, belief would be meaningless. We would have no need for faith. We must be able to recognize our creator by way of his creations. What is God's nature, but nature herself?

Why study science? Study science because it is within science that we are given the unique opportunities to know God's nature. Time, space, matter, consciousness, and free will are attributes of the creator. These are the universals common to all human beings.

On the other hand, infinity, is the antithesis of our imaginations. We can not comprehend infinity any more than we can grasp 4.5 billion years. It is beyond our comprehension. Our minds are limited. Knowing this, it is not so difficult for me to understand that our Earth is so grandly old, so timelessly wise, and so ingeniously created. If nature is God's shadowy image, then I would expect that the universe would also be beyond our grasps of comprehension. Do you still think that the universe is only 10,000 years old?

I love your phrase "infinity is the antithesis of our imaginations". I agree with you, I don't think our brains have the capacity to conceive of infinity. Thanks for this interesting article.

I don't think we can really comprehend the vastness of the universe, nor omnipotence or omniscience...

Hi Jennifer,

The great thing about God is that He has so many names and revealed those to us at different times for different purposes and He did not hide himself forever - to Jacob he was hidden because Jacob was a prideful man, but by the end of Jacob's life, long after he had become Israel, God revealed himself in many great ways :-) And as Jesus said, if you have seen Me, you have seen the Father. Praise God for His mighty goodness!  I can't wait to spend eternity with him getting all the questions we all have answered. - What an amazing day that will be!

God only knows how old the universe is, but thankfully He did reveal how old man is from the 6th day of Creation when He made man in His own image.

Good stuff, great thoughts - I love what you are doing. Blessings to you dear friend! Teresa

I can't imagine not having any questions, as in atheisism. Thanks for reading! :)

Oh, and but Adam and Eve also knew God very directly. They had no need for faith.

I know, that amazes me how God walked with them in the garden - until the sinned. But wow!!! To have been able to walk literally with God! But then again our turn will come :-) Your welcome, I always read what you write. Love you!

Are you a Christian? A follower of Christ? The same Christ who said that the Jews should believe the books of Moses because they testify about Him?

It would seem that you do not believe the books of Moses, specifically where he says in Exodus 20:11 that God created the world in 6 literal days. Same as in Exodus 31:17.

Where in the bible does it say that God used evolution to create anything? Please enlighten those who read this blog.

Is it not clear from Genesis 1 that it was six days?

Yes, I do understand that you would like to interpret Genesis 1 as being so much Hebrew poetry. However, that interpretation serves mainly to assure you that science is right and that God is wrong.

It's the same lie that Satan used to tempt Eve: "did God really say....", only in this case the question is not about the tree of the knowledge of good and evil but as to whether God said in His word : six days.

The books of Moses testify about Christ because they create the context for His coming, his death and resurrection. Without those books the bible is simply a load of gobbly-gook. Hence by implying that there's a fatal flaw in taking it literally, you destroy the very message you should want the world to know: It's because of SIN that things are the way they are and only by accepting the death of Jesus Christ as a sacifice for that sin can people avoid the wrath of God.

The death of Jesus is a propitiation that turns away the wrath of God from us who accept him as our Lord and Saviour.

Are you really a Christian? Have you truly given your life to Christ? Given that you are a staunch evolutionist - following the ways of those who absolutely deny that there is a God, or ANY God, nevermind a God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, one has to wonder. Who are you following and who are you leading others to follow?
